2 Kings 5:1-18 I am a young servant girl taken from my home in Israel by the mighty Syrian army. My master is Naaman, a most important man who is captain of the army of the king of Syria. When I was captured, I was given to Naaman's wife to serve her. Naaman is a great man who is brave and honorable, but he has a most horrible disease called leprosy. It cannot be cured. In my country people who have leprosy must live with other lepers and live apart from their loved ones and friends. I decided to tell my mistress, Naaman's wife, about Elisha, the prophet. I said, "If only my lord were with the prophet who is in Samaria! He would cure him of his leprosy." Naaman told the king of Syria about what I had said. The king then sent a letter, silver, gold, and clothing along with Naaman to the king of Israel. The letter read, "When this letter reaches you, know that I have sent to you my servant, Naaman, that you may cure him of his leprosy." When the king of Israel read the letter, he was so very upset that he tore his clothes, because he knew that he did not have the power to cure Naaman. When Elisha, the man of God, heard that the king had become upset and torn his clothes, he sent a message to the king of Israel. He said, "Why have you torn your clothes? Let him come to me that he may learn that there is a prophet in Israel." Naaman went with his horses and chariots and stopped at the entrance to Elisha's house. Elisha sent a messenger to him, saying, "Go wash in the Jordan River seven times, and your flesh shaU be restored and you shall be clean." My master, Naaman, became angry and went away saying, "I thought that for ME he would surely come out, and stand and call on the name of the Lord, his God, and would wave his hand over the spot, and cure the leprosy! Are not Abana and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than all the rivers of Israel? Could I not wash in them and be clean?" He turned and went away in great anger. My master's servants came near to Naaman and said, "Father, if the prophet had commanded you to do something difficult, would you not have done it? How much more, when all he said to you was, "Wash, and be clean?" My master, Naaman, went down and immersed himself (put his whole body under) in the Jordan River seven times. This was according to the word of the man of God. Naaman's flesh (skin) was made new like the flesh (skin) of a young boy, and he was clean. My God, the God of Israel, is all powerful, and how great is His name. |
